Tiller Cultivator – Everything You Need to Know
Considering a tiller cultivator? This article reviews important things you should know when choosing the type of tiller cultivator that’s right for you.
There are more reasons than one why I prefer to call ‘Gardening’ an art. It is not something that every Tom, Dick and Harry can attempt. It requires a certain skill set, a degree of sophistication and a good thorough know how of the various aspects that affect plant life in a garden. We all know the importance of watering the plants and weeding the soil.
But I hadn’t heard about cultivators and tillers until I became an amateur gardener. These are devices that help you to weed the soil and keep it loose and friable.
Loose friable soil always drains well and allows the roots to penetrate deeper. So if you are aiming for a productive garden or a flowerbed, then you should invest in a garden cultivator and garden tiller.
The size of your garden
A lot depends on the size of your garden. If you have a small garden, then you can use a hand soil cultivator to keep the soil loose and also to remove weeds.
On the other hand, if the garden is large, you might just want to invest in an electric tiller or cultivator to do the work. These are electrically powered machines with rotating lines and make the job much easier for you. The large heavy duty tines in a tiller are used for initial ground breaking and also help you dig the soil up to a depth of 6 to 8 inches. The cultivator has a much smaller line and only digs up to a depth of about 4 inches. They don’t work the soil as deeply and thoroughly as a tiller.

Tillers and Cultivators
They are available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. Front line tillers, mid line tillers, rear line tillers and mini tillers are some of the popular ones. A 1 horsepower tiller that has a 1 to 6 inch wide cultivating width is ideal for a smaller garden. These are easier to use and can be moved around easily. If you are planning to buy a garden tiller, then this is probably your best bet. You can of course, opt for much bigger tillers and/or cultivators as well. Some very large gardens use a 14 horsepower tiller that has a cultivation width of about 14 inches. The electric rototiller is a good model for beginners.
However, ensure that you have planned your garden with meticulous detail before investing in these costly equipments.
