Tiller Engine Maintenance

Posted in Mini Tillers by admin on the June 9th, 2009

tiller beltHere are some useful tips for keeping your tiller engine running and purring smoothly throughout the gardening season. Follow these guidelines and your tiller engine will be performing at its peak.

Well it is that time of year again and you are getting ready to plant your garden. As you dig your garden tiller out of the corner of the garage you notice it is full of cobwebs. Looks like you will have to perform some garden tiller maintenance.

So what sort of maintenance do you have to do before starting up your garden tiller for the first time? A lot has to do with the way you prepared your garden tiller for the winter storage. If you drained the fuel or added Sta-Bil to the gasoline you are in better shape than most people.

First it is always recommended that you follow the manufactures guidance. This procedure should be used as a general guideline.

The first thing I always do is give my garden tiller a good washing to get the dust off of it. Next for safety I pull the spark plug wire off. If you did not drain your fuel you will have to now. The best way is to remove the fuel line from the tank and let it drain outside away from anything electrical. Including your cell phone.

Some carburetors have a spring loaded drain on the bottom of the float bowl. If yours has one hold a rag underneath the drain and press in letting the gas drain into the rag. If you have an inline fuel filter it should also be checked or replaced at this time.

used roto tillerNext you will want to clean the air filter. Your garden tiller operates in dusty conditions so it is very important to keep your air filter clean. If you garden tiller has a 2 stage filter remove the both and tap the paper inner filter on the ground to shake out any dirt. Take the foam outer filter and wash it with soap and water. Let it dry thoroughly the re-oil it. Placing it in a plastic bag and adding a little light motor oil, work it into the foam and remove can do this.

Now we move on to the spark plug. Remove it and replace it with the same number that is on the old one. Make sure you check the spark plug gap and set it before re-installing. Most are pre-set from the manufacture but it never hurts to check. You should also place a small amount of ant seize compound on the threads of the spark plug before installing.

Make sure you do not have any gasoline or oil anywhere on your garden till that you may have spilled while working on it. If you do make sure it is completely cleaned off before attempting to start your motor. You can now re-connect you spark plug wire.

Add fresh fuel and check your oil level. Check for leaks. If everything looks good your garden tiller is ready to fire up. Start it and let it warm up. Shut it off and double check for leaks and oil level. If everything looks good your garden tiller is ready for use.

Mantis Garden Tiller

Posted in Mini Tillers by admin on the June 8th, 2009

The Mantis Garden Tiller is compact, but powerful, easy to use and can handle all of your gardening chores. The Mantis Garden Tiller makes gardening easier for just about everyone.

The following article discusses how to care for mini tillers like the Mantis Garden Tiller.

Small But Important Tool: Garden Tiller

A small tiller with a 2 HP machine is a useful tool for a home gardener. This small but versatile tool can be used for many purposes in your home garden. After winter. the soil is compacted by the action of snow. This makes the soil unsuitable for planting anything and needs to be tilled before any planting can be done.

Other countries of the world use animals for tiling but since we in the USA do not use the traditional power even for smaller gardens. the tiller is a good equipment to have even for a smaller gardener. The tillers break up the hardened soil and the planting of seeds becomes easier and plants grow better.

Care In Use Of Tiller

Mantis tiller accessoriesBefore you start using your newly acquired tiller in your garden. you must do some homework on your garden especially if you are new to the area. You should find out the following before start using garden tillers:

- Location of the utility lines and power lines. The utility lines like water lines and drains may be passing through your garden. If such is the case. you might inadvertently damage these lines causing inconvenience to many persons.

- The power lines may cause even more damage to the area near you house and your own safety may be endangered by your action.

- A tiller can be used with a person following a tiller or in case of large tillers riding the tiller. In such cases. it is imperative that you have read the manufacturer’s instructions regarding safe use of machine. Follow these instructions to the letter. Never allow your confidence (or rather overconfidence) to overpower you and operate till in an unsafe way.

- The tillers are to be used only for breaking up the compacted soil and it is not to be used as a power machine to remove large boulders from your garden. Any attempt to do so may land you in hospital as the entire tiller may turn turtle and injure you.

- Tillers are good for de-weeding after the crop comes up. In this case use the tiller with the lowest power to make sure that you do not damage the crop. Do not dig deep at this time otherwise; the results would not be as intended.

- Do not leave the tiller unattended. especially when children are around. A tiller not properly controlled can seriously injure a person. It can also cause death sometimes. A tiller can cause injury by taking you along with tiller just as floor polishers do.

If you rent the tiller and do not know the safety instructions. it is better to a contractor to till your garden. This way your work can be done at lower cost and much quicker. This way you will not put yourself to risk and at the same time your work will be completed.

A tiller does the work of a plow but a tiller is not a plow. A tiller can turn the soil in such a way that new soil is exposed for to elements and when you apply water to your garden the crop can take advantage of the new soil to grow fast.

huskee tillers

Small garden tillers are a godsend for the home gardener for preparing a garden, turning soil, and weeding. This article reviews many of the benefits of using small garden tillers on your gardening and landscaping chores.

Turning and cultivating the soil can be the dirtiest but most important task in gardening. The act of just doing it can be sometimes annoying. Others would say that it can however be satisfying without the need of hurting your back too much. You might say, how can it be possible? Well, the answer is simple – everything depends on the device.

For gardeners who have a small area of garden to work, a good mechanical garden tiller can make the task worthy of the two to three hours of working in your garden. Not only that, with the use of the machine, you can transform your lawn into a beautiful garden bed. Once the plants and flowers continue to grow, use the garden tiller for every other week in order to remove unnecessary weeds and to make the soil more open to rain and irrigation.

The machine that is able to make one garden beautiful usually falls under three different classes. These are the mini-tillers, front or the mid-tined tillers and the rear-tined garden tillers. You can buy or rent most classes of tiller except for the minis which are sometimes in short supply.

Mighty Mini

Mini tillers are regarded as the latest and rapid-growing class of cultivators or tillers. Consider them mainly as cultivators which are also able to work light tilling. Like for instance, you can use this tiller to put manure into your vegetable plot. However, if you are planning to work on a bigger garden or lawn, the bigger tiller class would be an ideal choice.

Most of these minis can till for about 8 inches depth and can till a width of about 6 to 12 inches. This would be half a work of a full-sized garden tiller. Since they are smaller in size and have tines on the front, the machine is easier to manage and control. You are also able to get near to fences, plants, walls and simply carry the tiller up when you finally come to the end of each garden row. The only drawback of this tiller class is that they are light-weighted which means they are likely to bounce when the machine hit the hard soil.

Rear-Wined Tillers

When you are planning to work for heavier task, use a rear-wined tiller. This tiller class propels or pushes itself into the garden with the help of small tractor. The best and the biggest rear-wined tiller only require some extra force from the gardener. Most of them have an utmost cultivating depth which is about eight inches and 14 to 34 inches on the width. Since this tiller class has wheels and have motor on the front tines, they cannot cultivate right through the obstacles.

So, make sure that you obtain a rear-wined tiller which has several forward and reverse gears, because this large machine is not easy to push using only the user’s force and power.

Front or the Mid-Tined Tiller

This is the full size and heavier version of the mini-tiller. They provide a tilling way at about 8 to 12 inches depth and 10 to 36 widths. Compared to rear-wined tiller, it can work right through the obstacles. However, it requires more force and power in order to operate. However, if you have a good soil and a more experienced ground, the operation of it can be easier.

Garden tillers really have the power to turn earth into a more attractive and effective scenery. So, have a regular date with your garden tiller in order for your garden to become the most eye-catching garden in your place.

Mantis Roto Tiller

Posted in Mini Tillers by admin on the June 7th, 2009

If your tiller is anything like I can recall before I got a mantis tiller, I can almost imagine what you’re feeling! With old heavy duty rototillers, they are surely worth their weight in gold, but when the rototiller repair time outweighs the tilling project, something needs to change!

I know with our old tiller is would spit and sputter, and out came the rototiller repair skills whether we liked it or not! Seemed to be nothing to go through a can of starting fluid even in the warm 80 degree weather! We would generally spend a half hour messing with the throttle, and talk about a tough pull to get the blasted thing started! Once it ran it did an excellent job of tilling, but the time wasted doing rototiller repair was crazy! We just needed to be sure that we could finish once we started. Should rain come our way or a neighbor stop to visit, there was no way the old bugger would start again. I could say we were experts at rototiller repair at that point in time. We surely had plenty of experience to say the least!

tiller com

I love gardening, and in fact, it’s a good way to relieve stress in the summertime after work. I could spend hours outside just tinkering, but hated the rototiller repair in the end! It was getting to the point where it was almost quicker and more relaxing to just flat pull those weeds by hand. I flat did not want to mess with the rototiller repair unless my husband was around because the rototiller knew it had me fooled!

A year and a half ago we gave up on tough old rototiller repair and decided to purchase a Mantis tiller. There was even a book that came with this one. The old rototiller was just a hand me down, and there was no book large enough for all the problems encountered! The Mantis tiller is light weight, and is so versatile that it can do almost any job required! It’s amazing that this little tiller can pull the weight and do a similar job in comparison with the old one. It’s brought the word fun back to gardening. I can get my outdoor chores done in over half the time! The rototiller repair is not nearly the problem it was in previous years!

With the transition of tillers, we surely have a new understanding of rototiller repair. Simple yearly rototiller repair maintenance will keep our Mantis tiller around for years!

Mantis Electric Tiller

Posted in Electric Tillers by admin on the June 1st, 2009

Mantis Electric Tiller CultivatorThe Mantis Electric Tiller actually makes preparing a garden a lot of fun. Gardening is a popular hobby, but it can be a lot of work. Fortunately, there are many innovative products available like the mantis electric tiller to make it easier.

It is a lightweight tiller that is easy to carry and actually powerful enough to cut through hard soil and sod. The electric Mantis has comparable power to its gas-powered cousins and is capable of doing all of the chores they can do. All you have to do is plug in the tiller, adjust the speed setting and the electric tiller quietly takes care of many of the landscaping and gardening chores around your home.

The width of it’s tilling path is adjustable from about 6 inches to 10 inches. It comes with an easy electric starter, 7 inch wheels and a Cordminder for controlling the cord while tilling. The excess cord slack retracts out of the way when tilling for safety purposes and to prevent the cord from getting damaged. The cord Length is 22 inches and can stretch out to 4 feet.

Mantis Electric Mini Tiller CultivatorThe tines provided spin at up to 240 rpm and can dig into the soil about ten inches. Almost, twice as much as the speed of other tillers which allows it to cut through compacted sod, soil or weeds that can tangle other brand tillers. The mini tiller is easy to guide because the tines are mounted under the engine so you accurately move the tiller between tight areas around trees or narrow rows in flower gardens or vegetable gardens. The tines are reversible which allows you to cultivate at a shallower depth and weed areas down to a 3 inch depth. The tines easily install on the tine shaft and reduces the amount of tangly, viny weeds that can wrap around the tine shaft during use.

It uses a fingertip speed adjustment control and shut-off switch for effective control and stopping. The unit weighs only about 20 pounds and is very light weight. It comes with fold-down handlebars that are well balanced and let you reach farther into your your tilling path and also makes for easy carrying of the unit from one location to another. Mantis offers a no-hassle two year warranty on their tillers, and a lifetime warranty on their tines for breakage.

This is a quality tiller that will cut through vegetable gardens with ease. Specially designed blades cultivate the soil into the perfect consistency for planting. The Mantis Electric Tiller makes gardening, yard, and lawn work easy.

Tiller Cultivator – Everything You Need to Know

Posted in Mini Tillers by admin on the June 1st, 2009

tiller familyConsidering a tiller cultivator? This article reviews important things you should know when choosing the type of tiller cultivator that’s right for you.

There are more reasons than one why I prefer to call ‘Gardening’ an art. It is not something that every Tom, Dick and Harry can attempt. It requires a certain skill set, a degree of sophistication and a good thorough know how of the various aspects that affect plant life in a garden. We all know the importance of watering the plants and weeding the soil.

But I hadn’t heard about cultivators and tillers until I became an amateur gardener. These are devices that help you to weed the soil and keep it loose and friable.

Loose friable soil always drains well and allows the roots to penetrate deeper. So if you are aiming for a productive garden or a flowerbed, then you should invest in a garden cultivator and garden tiller.

The size of your garden

A lot depends on the size of your garden. If you have a small garden, then you can use a hand soil cultivator to keep the soil loose and also to remove weeds.

On the other hand, if the garden is large, you might just want to invest in an electric tiller or cultivator to do the work. These are electrically powered machines with rotating lines and make the job much easier for you. The large heavy duty tines in a tiller are used for initial ground breaking and also help you dig the soil up to a depth of 6 to 8 inches. The cultivator has a much smaller line and only digs up to a depth of about 4 inches. They don’t work the soil as deeply and thoroughly as a tiller.

stihl mini tiller

Tillers and Cultivators

5hp tillerThey are available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. Front line tillers, mid line tillers, rear line tillers and mini tillers are some of the popular ones. A 1 horsepower tiller that has a 1 to 6 inch wide cultivating width is ideal for a smaller garden. These are easier to use and can be moved around easily. If you are planning to buy a garden tiller, then this is probably your best bet. You can of course, opt for much bigger tillers and/or cultivators as well. Some very large gardens use a 14 horsepower tiller that has a cultivation width of about 14 inches. The electric rototiller is a good model for beginners.

However, ensure that you have planned your garden with meticulous detail before investing in these costly equipments.
